First off, thank you for posting your thoughts/findings on these two players---much appreciated!!I am almost ready to order one from the Canadian site. Just one last thing: Pretend that OPPO has fixed the WCG deficiency, when you compare the other Tone Mapping attributes on the two players, how would you describe the differences. Is WCG the only difference? Can you ( if you have the time) post a couple of shots where the posterization was evident on the OPPO and then not present on the panny (assuming that it is, of course)?

I hope that someone who is 3D capable and has the new 820 will give a 3D disc a spin to see how adept the player is with 3D. Just want to have all my bases covered before buying.

It sounds exciting. Did you find the image on the UB820 to be cleaner/less noise than on the UB900? Member

Thanks again for posting that. At first I had just assumed this meant that just the Sony X700 player was problematic for DV content, but I had missed the part about the Sony TVs being problematic as well.More specifically, a recent Forbes article entitled Sony's UBP-X700 Now Plays Dolby Vision 4K Blu-rays Into Sony TVs - But It's All A Bit Of A Mess exposes the following problems:
'First, unlike other Dolby Vision-capable source devices, an updated X700 can’t automatically detect whether the source you’re watching is playing in HDR10 or Dolby Vision. You manually have to switch its Dolby Vision mode on via the player’s set up menus when you want to watch a DV source.'
'The lack of auto Dolby Vision/HDR10 switching is arguably even more of an issue with the X700's VUDU and Netflix apps. The thing is, these services carry a mixture of non-HDR, HDR10 and Dolby Vision content. Yet in Netflix’s case in particular, you only get a notification on its menus if a title is available in Dolby Vision if the app detects that it's running on a Dolby Vision-capable device. So with the X700, most users won’t be able to tell if a show they're interested in is available in Dolby Vision on Netflix unless they manually switch the X700’s Dolby Vision mode on to check if the header information for that show changes to say Dolby Vision.'
'Even more clumsy is the fact that if you activate the Dolby Vision mode on the X700, everything you play on the deck is output to your TV behind a Dolby Vision flag. As a result, even standard dynamic range HD Blu-rays and DVDs are presented to your TV as Dolby Vision sources. Which triggers your TV to go into Dolby Vision playback mode, resulting in pictures that look much brighter than they’re supposed to.'
'Thanks to this inability of the X700 to automatically switch in and out of Dolby Vision mode, you can’t just switch the mode on and leave it at that. You really are going to have to manually keep toggling DV on and off, with all the faff and potential for missing Dolby Vision sources that entails.'
It may be too early, but can you please comment on whether or not the Panasonic DP-UB820 suffers from the same issues?
It's nice to hear that Panasonic's intent is to address this in the UB820 in such a fashion that would support the Sony TVs as well, especially since I had been eyeing the Sony 75' X940E and the Sony 75' X900F.

I wonder how this will work with my SDR 1080p setup, if at all. I also have a sub 500 nit Sony X800E HDR TV, but it seems like a waste to pair the UB820 with it, as that TV does not support DV and it's only 43' anyway. OTOH, if my Sony VPL-HW45ES gets no benefit from the UB820 over my existing UB400, then perhaps it makes sense to pair the UB400 with the projector and pair the UB820 with the XBR-43X800E TV. This brings me to another point:I see people contemplating the UB900 over the UB820 to save some money, but unless you want the UB900's audio features, it seems the better cost saving measure may be to buy the UB400 over the UB900 in this context, since the UB400 has identical video performance with the same video features. Or you could wait a while and order the UB420 from Canada. All are missing Dolby Vision though.

It is beyond my comprehension why this player, which has been in development for some time, and with Panasonic having to be familiar with the Sony DV and Oppo debacle, wasn't released with full DV functionality. That alone completely turns me off to this machine and makes me very wary. If I'm wrong, please educate me. Thanks.
Fair enough, but just as a counterpoint: I'm pleasantly surprised by Denon and Marantz for their 2015 receivers. I bought a lower end Denon 2015 model and a mid end Marantz 2015 model way back, and both are getting Dolby Vision updates this summer. I can't report on the updates yet, but the good news is their higher end brethren got the update in spring 2018 and they work fine. That said, I will wait until the Panasonic gets the DV update before buying a Sony TV, for the reasons cited above in your post and in the post at the top.

I see no Toronto dealers mentioning the UB820 either, just Panasonic itself. And Panasonic is making no comment about the UB420 (even though it already has a support page for it). Given the low pricing in Canada though I figure it makes sense to get the UB820 with Dolby Vision, especially since I'm considering getting a new 75'+ TV in the near to mid term, to replace my 1080p Sony 45ES projector.BTW, my order status states 'ORDER IS BEING PROCESSED', whatever that means. I assume that means after shipping, but I'm not sure. BTW, I live 45 km from their headquarters. I don't know if they ship from there though. If they ship by tomorrow, and it arrives in 4 business days, that would work. I hope it's not longer though since I'll be out of town after that on vacation. However, theoretically, they could ship by tomorrow and I could get it tomorrow since they are so close. So there are the following controls in the HDR Optimizer settings when playing back a UHD disc that are pictured in images on Value Electronics website:
Dynamic Range adjustment
Brightness
Tone curve White
Tone Curve Black
System Gamma
I don't see system gamma. I am wondering if that is because I am outputting SDR Bt2020 and not HDR. Can anyone test sending SDR BT2020 and see if they have the system gamma setting? Or I wonder if this is a ub9000 only feature, since the image is labeled that way..though I thought the video features were the same between the 820 and 9000.

There shouldn't be noise unless bad cables or if it's in the source. I had that issue in the past win non-4K players and bad cables but not now.I do think however it does a better job with dark picture. It just feels I've seen less of poor compression, artefacts and elevated blacks. It won't fix a bad disc but does a better job where other players fail. Upscaling is impressive and really if it wasn't for HDR I probably wouldn't bother buying UHD discs
PS. Pressing HDR Settings button will also give you chance to switch between standard and natural environment. The latter one is great for daytime UHD viewing when some discs are little too dark.

I almost feel like the price they listed was a mistake. Seemed low when you compare it to the price of the device in every other region. I'm hoping their TVs once released here will be in similar fashion for pricing, but they also haven't released any dates. Best I could get was 'maybe August, maybe September, maybe October.' I initially wondered about that too. However, they've since updated their main page and the price remained the same. Furthermore, it turns out that the US pricing is the highest out of the ones I checked. So, while the Canadian pricing is a bit of an outlier, the prices in Germany and the UK are actually slightly closer to the Canadian pricing than they are to the US pricing, whereas the Australian pricing is right in between.USA: US$499.99 (Tax not included)
AUS: AU$659.00 (US$486 but that includes 10% GST, so real price is AU$599.09 or US$442)
CAD: CA$499.99 (US$384, tax not included)
GER: €449.00 (US$521 but that includes 19% VAT, so real price is €377.31 or US$438)
GBR: £399.99 (US$521 but that includes 20% VAT, so real price is £333.33 or US$435)

Question:
Since you can set the 820 to HDR to SDR 2020 without the HD Fury or whatever, does that apply when watching Netflix? Meaning if you playe Luke Cage, which would normally be in 2160p HDR or DV, does it output at 2160p SDR?

I just read elsewhere that the HDR Optimizer does not work with Dolby Vision. This was in the context of 4K UHD Blu-ray, but I'd assume it'd be the same for Netflix as well. AVS Forum Addicted Member

HDR to SDR conversion is a setting in the menu separate from HDR Opt. On the 900, you had to trick it with an HDR Fury telling the 900 your display was 4K, but could not handle HDR, so the 900 would output SDR 2020 2160p. People with older tv's or tv's with terrible tone mapping could benefit from 2020 color space and the 2160p disc resolution. On the 820, you do not need to trick it, you can make it send out SDR 2020 from the menu and I was wondering if this applied to apps.

In another thread, tyee said he called Panasonic Canada and they said they are sold out of the UB820 until next month! However, they also said that they have shipped out a bunch of units to dealers.
So, I would expect to see some Canadian retailers with the UB820 soon. Canadians, you'd better get those pre-orders in if you want one sooner rather than later. OTOH, it sounds for major retailers like Best Buy Canada, we probably won't see stock available until September. This jives with the post here saying that Best Buy USA isn't getting stock until the end of August.

This jives with the post here saying that Best Buy USA isn't getting stock until the end of August.

Just came from Best Buy Ajax where I was specifically told that they (BB) will NOT be carrying the 820 or the 9000. Gonna check with 2001 AV to see where they stand. In the meantime, I keep checking the link (Panasonic Canada e-store) you provided, hoping they will get some more stock. So, I would expect to see some Canadian retailers with the UB820 soon. Best Buy Canada not carrying the 820? That seems odd, since they carry the 900. We shall see. Maybe the reps and manager at Best Buy Ajax simply don't know this early in the game. The 820 does make things a bit difficult for Canadian retailers who still have stock of the 900 though, since the MSRP of the 900 is so much higher.Meanwhile, I'm checking my order status several times a day.

I like it. Easy setup, basically a 900 with better software and the latest hardware. Nothing wrong with that either.

Netflix:
Outputs 60hz still
Has new app
HDR looks great
If you set 820 to SDR 2020 you just get UHD playback with no HDR which is great for people that need that
Dolby Digital 5.1

Mine has shipped! No ETA as of yet but it's with the shipper. I'm guessing I'll see it around Wednesday/Thursday next week being out west. Meanwhile, I'm checking my order status several times a day.

Same here. Shipped this afternoon from Toronto (Etobicoke). The shipper's website is surprisingly sparse on info though. Originally Posted by OJ1986

Given that I live in Toronto too, I'm expecting delivery tomorrow. Hopefully anyway. Member
